Wed 10th left hotel after early breakfast at Mt. Zion Hotel to go to wailing wall. Walked in tunnel under the city next to the West Wall- can see bottom of Herod's wall. We can not enter Mosque or dome of Rock d/t fear of retaliation after 9/11. We zigged around cisterns and excavations going on beneath the tunnel itself. We came up near the stairs to the Temple mount. Here and before the tunnel are security checkpoints.
We started woking our way thru lthe Stations of the Cross in the old town- we moved along the Via Dolorosa lined with merchants to the Church of the Hopy Sepulchre which was crowdd with people - Helena had built here too! The sepulchre is held by the Greek Orthodox, Catholic, Armeneon and Etheopians: each with its own sction and no cooperation. The Armeneans had a chapel fire and cannot repair it as no one will let them bring equipment through their own areas. Here are the last 3 stations- including Jesus's Crusafiction on Golgotha and the stone where they layed him after as his tomb. One Catholic priest invited us into his otherwised closed section to see part of the column to which Jesus was tied to be flailed.
For lunch we had falafals on the sidewalk at a cafe and shopped in the bazzar. It is quite hot here considering it should be mild- over 80 degrees. We still had 2 more sites to see- The Church of All Nations and King David's burial site under the room of the Last Supper. We also saw a symbolic tomb of Mary where people were lighting candles in her memory.
We had a beer and then dinner in the hotel. We negotiated the price of our dinner but still thought it wa too high- will find another spot tomorrow night or just skip it- can barley get into our clothes as it is.
